Motivation and their types with role in our lives — the first-year Psychology chapter on what moves us
A study guide to chapter six of first-year Psychology: what motivation is, its types, and why the sheet says a homoeopathic physician should study it.

Why did you get up this morning? Maybe you were hungry. Maybe you had a class. Maybe you wanted to do well, or did not want to let your parents down. Maybe it was all of these at once. Whatever the answer, something moved you. Psychology calls that something motivation.
The NCH syllabus gives “Motivation and their types with role in our lives” chapter six of Fundamentals of Psychology in relation to Homoeopathy (HomUG-FPH). The sheet lists only two topics. This is one of the shortest chapters on the paper. This piece says so plainly, and does not pad it out.
A note on the title
The title reads “Motivation and their types”. In everyday English you would write “Motivation and its types”. The first topic line does use “its”. Copy the title exactly as the sheet prints it when you need to quote it. Just know that “their” here means the types of motivation.
The title also has a second half: “with role in our lives”. So the chapter is not only about definitions. It asks what motivation does in real life.
Topic one: what motivation is, and its types
“Study of Motivation and its types”.
Motivation is what moves a person to act, and what keeps them going. It explains why we start something, why we keep at it, and why we sometimes stop.
The sheet does not list the types. Your textbook will give them, and the theories psychologists have built to explain motivation. Learn each type with one everyday example from your own life. Hunger, a class test, a friend’s approval, a goal you set for yourself: these are all good places to look for examples.
Then go back to the title’s second half. For each type, ask: what role does this play in our lives? That turns a list into an answer.
Topic two: why a homoeopathic physician should study it
“Importance of study of Motivation for Homoeopathic Physicians”.
The sheet names the reason for study, but it does not give the reason itself. Two readings are possible, and your teachers will tell you which they mean. They may mean both.
Understanding the patient. A physician meets people who want different things. What a person wants, fears and strives for is part of who they are. Other chapters of this paper ask how thought, feeling and behaviour are recorded in Materia Medica and Repertory. This chapter does not add that line. But a physician who understands motivation may hear more in a patient’s story.
Understanding yourself. BHMS is a long course. There will be weeks when your own motivation runs low. Knowing how motivation works may help you notice what moves you, and what drains you.
Hold both readings loosely until your teachers say which one the exam wants.
How the chapter sits in the year
This is chapter six. Chapters two to five dealt with the three parts of the mind: thought, feeling and behaviour. This chapter asks what drives them into action. The next chapter, “Learning and its place in adaptation”, follows naturally. Motivation often decides what we choose to learn.
A study method
Because the sheet is thin, make your notes strong where it is strong.
- Write one clear definition of motivation.
- List the types your textbook gives, with one example of each from Indian student life.
- For each type, add one line on its role in our lives.
- Write a short paragraph on why a homoeopathic physician should study motivation, in the words your teachers use.
That is the whole chapter, on one or two pages.
What to take from it
- Know the title exactly, including “their”.
- Define motivation in plain words.
- Know its types and one example of each.
- Explain its role in everyday life.
- Explain why the sheet says a homoeopathic physician should study it.
The sheet gives two topics and no detail. It does not list the types or the theories. Those come from your textbook and your teachers.
Where to go next on the platform
This piece sits in the first-year Psychology room. “Psychology in the First Year — the study of mind, for homoeopaths” gives the map of all twelve chapters. “Psychology in homoeopathic training: why it is there” explains, for any reader, why a homoeopathy course studies the mind at all.
