Children at a homoeopathic clinic: what parents should ask

Many families in India take their children to a homoeopath. If you are thinking of doing the same, you will have questions. That is a good sign. A parent who asks questions is doing their job.

This piece gives you the questions worth asking. It will not tell you whether homoeopathy is right for your child, or what any medicine does. That is a conversation for a qualified professional who can actually see and examine your child. What we can do is help you walk in prepared.

Why children need extra care in any system

Children are not simply small adults. Their bodies are still growing and changing. That is true in every system of medicine, and homoeopathy is no exception.

The homoeopathy curriculum reflects this. At postgraduate level, Paediatrics is one of seven MD (Hom) specialities. Its curriculum starts with growth and development, nutrition, and the care of newborns, before moving through each body system. A doctor who chooses this speciality trains in it for three years.

That tells you something useful. Child health is treated as its own field of study. So it is fair to ask how much of that study your homoeopath has done.

Questions about training

“What are your qualifications?” A homoeopath in India will usually hold a BHMS degree. Some also hold an MD (Hom).

“Do you have specific training in children’s care?” This is a fair and polite question. Here is one thing worth knowing. There is no subject called Paediatrics in the BHMS course. Paediatrics appears as a named speciality only at MD level. So a BHMS degree alone does not mean specialist training in children’s health. Ask about experience and further training in plain words, and listen to the answer.

Questions about registration

“What is your registration number, and where are you registered?” A practising homoeopath in India must be registered with a State Council or on the NCH National Register. The NCH is the National Commission for Homoeopathy. A practitioner used to being asked will not mind. You are asking on behalf of someone who cannot ask for themselves.

Questions about your child’s other doctors

Many children also see a paediatrician or a family doctor. That is common and fine. What matters is that nobody is working in the dark.

  • “How will you work alongside my child’s other doctors?” A good answer welcomes openness.
  • “Should I share this visit with our paediatrician?” The answer should be yes.

Take a list of every medicine your child takes, from every doctor, to every visit. And one firm rule: never stop, pause or change a medicine your child is taking without speaking to the doctor who prescribed it. If a practitioner asks you to hide your child’s other care from another doctor, treat that as a warning sign.

Questions about the visit itself

  • “How long will the visit take?” Homoeopathic visits often run long, because of the detailed conversation called case-taking. A tired or hungry child may find that hard. It helps to know in advance.
  • “Can I stay with my child the whole time?” It is always fine to ask. A clear answer before the visit helps your child feel safe too.
  • “What will you ask about?” Expect questions about your child as a whole person, not just one complaint.

Questions about what to watch for

“What should make me go to a hospital, and not wait for our next visit?” This may be the most important question of all. A responsible practitioner will answer it clearly.

And here is our answer too. If your child seems seriously unwell, or something changes suddenly, do not wait. Go to the nearest hospital, or call 112, India’s emergency number. No website, including this one, replaces urgent care for a child.

What we will never do

We will not name a childhood condition beside a remedy. We will not suggest starting, stopping or changing any care your child receives. We will not tell you what results to expect. Those decisions belong to you and the professionals who examine your child.

Where to go next on this platform

The Paediatrics topic in Homoeopathy Knowledge explains the MD speciality for curious readers, and says plainly that it is about a course of study, not about your child. “Questions Worth Asking Your Homoeopath” has more questions for any first visit. And the For Care-seekers page is where you can look for a qualified homoeopath and see their qualification and registration details.

This piece is for learning. It is not medical advice. For your own health, please see a registered doctor.
