What Is Homoeopathy?

Vaibhav Kumar Rai·

Homoeopathy is a system of medicine that began just over two hundred years ago, developed by a German physician named Samuel Hahnemann. If you’ve heard the word without ever being told what it actually refers to, that’s a fair place to start: it’s a distinct system with its own principles, its own way of examining a patient, its own body of literature, and — in India today — its own regulated professional training, the same way conventional medicine, Ayurveda or dentistry each have theirs.

The core idea homoeopathy is built on is a way of choosing a remedy: by comparing the picture a substance produces when it’s studied in a healthy person against the picture of the illness in the patient. That comparison, and the careful process of building it, is what homoeopathic training spends years teaching. We’re not going to try to explain, on one general page, whether or how well this works — that’s a genuinely contested question, discussed at length elsewhere, and not one this platform is trying to settle for you. What we can tell you plainly is what the system is, how it’s structured, and how it’s regulated here.

In India, homoeopathy is one of the recognised systems of medicine. Practitioners complete a Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) — an undergraduate degree that includes both the foundations of general medicine and the specific study of homoeopathy — regulated by the National Commission for Homoeopathy. Some go on to a postgraduate MD (Homoeopathy) in one of seven specialities. A practitioner’s qualification and registration are things you can and should ask about and check, the same way you would with any other health professional.

This platform exists partly to make that checking easier — a directory of practitioners whose qualification, college and registration are stated plainly, not a marketing page for any one of them. If you’re looking for a homoeopath, that’s a reasonable place to start, and it’s covered in more detail elsewhere on this shelf.

What this page won’t do, and what nothing on this platform will do, is claim that homoeopathy cures, treats or prevents any particular condition, or suggest a remedy for one. Those are claims a general information page has no business making, whatever system of medicine is being described. If you’re weighing whether homoeopathic care is right for a health concern of yours, that’s a conversation to have with a qualified, registered homoeopathic practitioner — and, where it’s relevant, with whichever other doctor you already see. Nobody on this platform will tell you to start, stop or replace any care you’re currently receiving; that decision, and the medical judgement behind it, belongs to you and the professionals treating you.

This shelf will keep growing with more plain explanations like this one — how a consultation works, how remedies are made, what to ask when you’re choosing a practitioner — written for anyone who wants to understand the system a little better, not to be persuaded of anything about it.

This piece is for learning. It is not medical advice. For your own health, please see a registered doctor.
